Parents, don’t miss this free seminar featuring Michelle Busch-Upwall from the Utah Attorney General’s Office. Busch-Upwall, a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, will discuss ways for parents to safeguard their children from sexting and a form of blackmail known as sextortion while offering tips for what to do if you encounter it. The Jan. 15 event will be held at , but is open to all Canyons District parents and high-school-age students. Families are advised to leave younger children at home due to the mature nature of the presentation. Here’s How Students Take Advantage of all the Educational Opportunities We Provide November 22, 2019 Uncategorized Did you know that 20 percent — or one in five — of Canyons District’s 34,000 students are enrolled in the school of their choosing, or a school other than the one assigned to them by geographic boundaries? Many come to us from outside the District, including students who have chosen to enroll at our school. Utah is what’s known as a School Choice state, and we are proud to be the school of choice for our students. Under Utah law, students who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood school may apply to transfer to another school by submitting a Standard Open Enrollment Form. In Canyons District, families are able to submit these forms online from the comfort of their home or office using our Online Permit Portal . For the coming school year, the window for applying for the school-choice permits will open Dec. 1 and end Feb. 21. School transfers are approved when space is available and on a first-come, first-served basis. With the arrival of the season’s first major snow, and more in the forecast for the Salt Lake Valley, there will be days in the coming weeks when traveling to and from school is challenging for families. Please give yourself extra time to walk and drive to school or arrive at the bus stop safely. On wet, wintry days, our schools are lenient with tardies because we want everyone arriving to school safe, sound, and ready to learn. Keep in mind that, while some of us would prefer to be hitting the slopes or staying tucked in bed with a good book, “snow days,” or school cancellations are rare in Utah. More often, the District will choose to delay the start of school in order to provide our partner cities with more time to clear sidewalks and streets. Backpack Policy June 26, 2019 News & Announcements School requires that backpacks remain in lockers from the beginning of first period to the end of sixth period. This policy has been discussed with and passed by School Community Council, PTSA and the IHMS Building Leadership Team. The concerns that lead to this decision included, but are not limited to: The weight of backpacks that students pack around all day long and the possible adverse issues as students are physically developing. Safety concerns in the hallways with the extra 12-15 inches of space for each backpack in our already very crowded hallways. Safety concerns in the classrooms with as many as 30-40 backpacks on the ground creating unsafe walking paths. Organizational issues with backpacks being the “black hole” of missing assignments and working against our students’ success. What students will be allowed to take to periods 1-6: Students will be allowed to carry a standard size (16” x 14”x 5”) drawstring bag or sash style book bag of similar size The required IHMS organizational binder (these can be purchased from the school or supplied by the student). Students will be allowed to take a backpack to 7 th period due to the strict bus departure schedule. Organizational Tips Students should organize their day a couple of periods at a time to avoid having to carry too much stuff to every classroom. Students could have more than one drawstring bag for the morning and one for the afternoon to help them with staying organized a couple periods at a time.
